Comments From Students
"... your class was excellent. A must for all people preparing for the exam."
- John Stanley, Douglas WY
(John took our exam prep class in January of 2000 and passed the Wyoming Journeyman exam 2 weeks later).
"Thanks to you and your course I passed the Journeyman's exam one week later (March 24, 2000) with an 82%, which in turn got me a bonus at work. Thank you again, I will recommend your course to anyone who will be taking the exam," Ted Bills, Rapid City, SD.
"This class shed light onto the dark areas of the code. Time spent here was very worthwhile and I know it will help a lot when taking my Journeyman test." - Larry M., Custer SD
Electrician's Exam Preparation Course:
This course will help you prepare for a journeyman or master electrical licensing exam. It is also approved for continuing education credit for electrician license renewal in a number of states.

I use the Electrician's Exam Preparation text book by Mike Holt as the guide and format for this class. This is an excellent study reference as you prepare to take your exam.

It does not matter what level of test you are preparing for, this class will help you prepare. The electrical code requirements covered by this class will be necessary for any level of license:
Journeyman electrician
Master electrician
Electrical Contractors
Electrical inspectors
If you are testing for a master or contractor level, the one thing that I do not cover is the business law part of the test. At this time, that is not a part of the test in every state, so you will need to check with your state testing authorities to see if you will be tested on that component. In the states where I teach this class, the business law is not included, so I have not incorporated that.
The Exam Prep class does not cover the nuts and bolts part of a daily installation that most electricians are pretty comfortable with, there is a limit to how much I can pack into a sixteen hour class. So you may want to brush up on some of the common installation requirements. Mike Holt's Electrician's Exam Preparation book does go into more detail, especially in the NEC review questions that are included. I used it as a guide as I developed this course, and it really is a lot of help. For an additional chapter by chapter study of the "nuts and bolts" of the National Electrical Code, I recommend Mike Holt's Understanding the National Electrical Code book.
Our 16 hour class has been very successful for both Journeyman and Master's level exam preparation. We will occasionally be offering an additional one day Advanced Commercial Calculations class for Master's level preparation to help with some of the more advanced commercial calculations.
About the Class format:
Steve Arne is an experienced teacher with a technical education degree and state technical education certification, who knows how to help you learn and develop your skills, in addition to being a Master Electrician with electrical experience.
Our goal is not to entertain you, but to involve you, motivate you, and teach you to be self sufficient in doing electrical code calculations.
You will spend time in Steve's classes doing actual electrical code calculation practice, after appropriate demonstrations and instructions. The best way to learn is through demonstrations, involvement, and practice.
The typical code calculation problem will be presented in this manner:
Steve will first provide relevant instruction, explaining code requirements and calculation methods. Steve will work an example to demonstrate the proper application of the instruction just provided. The class participants will work problems to build understanding and reinforce instruction. Participants will come away from the class with the ability to work code problems on their own.

You will need a 2008 National Electrical Code book and a calculator. (If you need to purchase a 2008 code book, you can do that on this site also).

This class covers
electrical code tables
electrical calculations
pipe sizing
wire ampacity tables
how to apply 110-14(C) requirements for temperature limitations at terminations
junction box sizing
voltage drop
motor branch circuits
motor feeder circuits
residential service calculations
electrical theory review
transformers
much more!
That's right: all of the things that are on the licensing exams, but most of us do not use every day in the field, and we really need to review before taking a test!
You can pass your test!
If you are preparing to take a licensing exam, this course will help you fine tune your understanding of the code calculations and tables and get ready for a passing score on your exam.
Have you taken an exam already, and been unable to pass? Many others have had that experience before taking this class. I hear comments in nearly every class from students who have been unsuccessful on their test before coming to class, and after the class understand how to work the problems they have failed previously!
I am always delighted when I hear students make remarks like, "In the first morning of this class, I already have learned enough to correct the mistakes that I was making. I have already received my money's worth from this class".
Register for the Electrician's Exam Preparation class now!
Many electricians also take this class as a good review, even if they are not testing. This class is pre-approved for continuing education credit in South Dakota and Wyoming, and many other states that accept those pre-approvals. So if you need code continuing credit hours, this class will provide 16 hours for license renewal.
(Check with your state to see if they will accept SD or WY pre-approval).
Register now, and get prepared to pass that test!

If for any reason you are unable to travel to one of our seminars, you can start your study with the book that we have modeled our Exam Preparation course after:
2008 Electrician's Exam Preparation book by Mike Holt
I have used the last four editions of Mike Holt's Electrical Exam Preparation book. This is the 2008 version, which has been updated to coincide with the 2008 National Electrical Code. Mike Holt does a great job of keeping his books current and up to date. You can count on this book to deliver the information that you will need to take any level of licensing exam based on the National Electrical Code (NEC).
This book begins with a review of electrician's math and electrical theory and lays the groundwork to understand the NEC requirements for our electrical installations. A review of this nature is very essential before we begin the study of more in-depth calculations in the NEC. Throughout this book, code questions are intermingled with examples and illustrations. More than 2400 problems and questions will help you to review the NEC, and the answer key is included, so you can check yourself and keep on track with your studies.
Printed in full color, the 2008 Exam Prep book covers Theory, Code, and Calculations in great detail. Clear colorful graphics guide you step-by-step through all the material you’ll need to pass your exam the first time. This book contains hundreds of illustrations, examples, and practice questions covering all of these subjects including 36 practice quizzes. This book is intended to be used with the 2008 National Electrical Code.
